The Agony of Self Doubt

“Of all the traps and pitfalls in life, disesteem is the deadliest, and the hardest to overcome, for  it is a pit designed and dug by our own hands, summed up in the phrase, ‘it’s no use – I can’t do it’.”  Maxwell Maltz

The biggest injury a human being can inflict on him/herself is the loss of self-confidence. In today’s world, self-confidence is an important factor in pursuing that passion, earning that dream job and attracting great opportunities we least expect would come our way. Powerful – that is what it is.

No one was created worthless. We all have something to offer hence our existence on earth. Over the years, we have held unto the numerous failures, fear, unpleasant experiences and other demeaning encounters which has been the catalyst for our current state of what I call self-torture.

The absence of confidence in one’s self can indeed be frustrating and hinders self-development when we thoroughly think about it – especially when we see the stellar strides our colleagues have made over the years and we, still at a standstill within the same period. Indeed if we would be true to ourselves, we would realize that we form part of our unprogressiveness not because we do not make an effort but just that we do not believe in ourselves in the first place.

We fondly admire individuals we see on our screens, hear on radio, classmates, and others passionately, boldly and excellently doing what they are good at. We stare admirably at them and wish in our hearts that we could do same. Yes! We can because our creator has blessed each and every one of us with something we can present to the world to make it a better place to inhabit.

As students preparing ourselves for the world of work, it is expedient for us to use the university to build on our confidence and hone our skills because in as much as this may sound hurtful but true, in today’s competitive world, most people are reluctant to listen or back projects pitched by individuals who are nervous, fumbling and very apologetic. Therefore maximize every avenue at your disposal to build on yourself and talent – remember, no talent is unimportant.

So remember that before you leave the shores of your school, make sure you rock and own the outfit of self-confidence and leave a wow impression on your audience wherever you find yourself.
