UCC Sports Team Presents GUSA Games Trophies to Management

The Sports Team has presented trophies the team won at the 26th Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games held at the University of Ghana from January 3 to 19, 2020 to the Vice-Chancellor and Management team

UCC  Sports team emerged overall champions with a total of 64 medals consisting of 28 gold, 23 silver, and 13 bronze at the Games.

Briefing the Vice-Chancellor, Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, and other members of Management of the University, the Chairman of the Sports and Recreation Committee, Dr. Charles Domfeh, noted that the team had been crowned champions of both mini and main GUSA Games since 2012 up to date. “We have now completed the cycle of winning both the mini and main GUSA Games in all the member Universities from 2012” he indicated.

Dr. Domfeh appealed to Management to invest in sports infrastructure and management of Sportsmen and women. He called for a policy to help the University to realise enough Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to support sports activities in the University. “If we are able to develop sports infrastructure such as Astro Turf we can generate money for the University by charging other institutions or individuals that want to organise competitions or events there,” he noted. He further announced that “Two of our students are playing in the American Major League and if we had managed them well we could have been rewarded for these two players”.

Dr. Domfeh was grateful to Management for the continuous support over the years and indicated that “this has propelled us to win all these laurels for the University”. 

UCC Sports Team Has Made us Proud
The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh, who led the team to the GUSA Games in Legon, said a recommendation had been made to Management to upgrade the Sports Section to a Directorate in order to put in place the required structures to promote sports activities in the University. She congratulated the team on the feat it had achieved saying “You have done well by making UCC visible again through Sports”.   She commended the coaches for the passion with which they worked, especially lecturers who volunteered to take up responsibility for some of the disciplines.

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, congratulated members of the team and assured them of Management’s continuous support. He noted that UCC was not only excelling academically, but was also making headlines through sports. 

Celebration of Success
Prof. Ampiah promised that the University would organise a special event to recognise and celebrate the successes of the team. “We need to celebrate this achievement in a grand style and also invite other institutions from Cape Coast to take inspiration from our team,” he added.

Present at the meeting were the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora F. Edu-Buandoh, Registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan; Provost, College of Distance Education, Prof. Isaac K. A. Galyuon; Provost, College of Humanities and Legal Studies, Prof. Eric F. Amuquandoh; Provost, College of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong; Provost, College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Prof. Moses Jojo Eghan and Provost, College of Education Studies, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis.
    
Others were the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Eugene K. M. Darteh; Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Jeff Onyame; Ag. Director of Public Affairs, Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (rtd) and Senior Assistant Registrar, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Georgina Asi Owusu, Head of Sports Section, Mr. Timothy Mensah, members of the Sports and Recreation Committee and some sports coaches.
