UCC SRC officially Launches “Africa’s Biggest Idea Challenge”

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has officially launched a business idea challenge as part of its 54th Week Celebration.

Speaking at the launch, the SRC President of UCC, Mr. Dennis Larbi Ampofo, explained the need for this initiative by indicating that, many individuals have great ideas that need to be supported in order to make the ideas realities.

“I am sure we all probably have something burning inside us that at a point in time, we want to see this thing materialise so much.”

He thus stated that the basics of this initiative is to see in some few years to come many young entrepreneurs taking great employment positions.

“The vision that runs through this project shall be a vision that see the seizure of graduate unemployment”, he
said.

Dr. Edward Amarteifio of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Small Scale Enterprise Development (CESSED),
took students and persons present at the launch through details of the challenge and what is required of perspective applicants.

Interested students are to submit summaries of their idea with details of their information including the names of the individual or team (not more than five persons), name of department, contact and also a brief description of the business idea.

Below are details of the challenge

Eligibility
*Participants are encouraged to have between 1-5 members.

*All participating members computing must be currently registered students of the University of Cape Coast.

*Participants may consist of a mix of student status (i.e. undergraduate, graduate, Ph. D., and post-doc).

*Participants may submit more than 1 entry. However, only 1 entry per team will be selected for advancement to the semi-finals.

Guidelines
*Students must submit a summary and a PowerPoint Presentation using the Idea Challenge Templates provided.

*Participants will be given mentors who will coach them to reshape the ideas.

*The top ten proposals from all entries received will then present their business ideas to a panel of judges who will determine the Challenge’s ultimate First, Second and Third Prize Finalists who will receive monetary awards.

The challenge is opened from now till Wednesday, 8th March, 2017 for the submission of business ideas at the SRC office by 4:30pm.

On Friday, 10th March, 2017, ten ideas will be selected from the lot submitted and coaches will be assigned to the respective owners of the ideas.

The finals of the challenge will be held on Thursday, 6th April, 2017 to determine which ideas will be pitched and supported by the SRC and its team.

The winner of this challenge will be awarded a cash prize of GHC 10,000.00, first runner up will be given GHC 5,000.00 and the second runner up receives GHC 3,000.00

Templates for the idea challenge are available at the SRC office for students who would want to be part of the business challenge.

Speaking to choicism.com, the SRC President indicated that when he leaves office, he will be working with whoever takes office as the next SRC president and he is hopeful this initiative will continue.

The Vice-Dean of Students of UCC, Dr. Eugene Dartey who chaired the programme encouraged students to take interest in this challenge.

He also advised persons who will be competing in the challenge to be responsible and discipline.

Present at launch were the Vice-Dean of the School of Business, Dr Siaw Frinpong, SRC Executives and USAG Secretary, Alex Sefa Boakye.
