The University of Cape Coast (UCC) House of Parliament has sworn in Rt.Hon Awosika Awotunde as the new House Speaker.
Rt. Hon Awotunde,aka Tunde, the immediate past deputy minority leader,was elected by the members of the house,after polling 70% of the total valid votes to beat his closest challenger, Hon. Yaya Tauffic,who had 30% of the total valid votes.
The new leaders of the House include
Hon.Yaya Toffic,the first Deputy Speaker;Hon.
Albert Nuakoh,the second Deputy Speaker; Enoch Lelabi, Majority leader; Mr.Desmond Kojo Amponsah ,House Clerk; Abdul Karim Yahaya, Minority Leader;
Ziblim Abdul-wakil, Deputy Majority leader
Speaking at a Dinner and Induction ceremony held at the Casford Hall Conference room, Mr. Francis Acquah Anan,an associate member of the House, called on the members of parliament to be abreast of the Standing Orders of the House.
He urged the leadership of the House to strive to get a law student to represent the house so as not to fall foul of the laws.
He asked the House to bring on board past members of the House who had completed school and were well established to assist the House to get canopies so as to avoid the scorching sun members sit under during debate.
For his part, Mr.Kofi Amoako Agyei,Planning committe chair, Medical students Association, underscored the need for members to adopt food safety and food storage. He advised them to wash their hands at all times before eating.
In his inaugural address, the newly elected Speaker, Rt.Hon. Awosika Awotunde, noted that he was bringing on board parliament that would influence decisions for students’ welfare.
He touched on fighting for the proper formation and inauguration of Ghana National Student Parliament House.
He congratulated the outgone speaker for a good work done and promised to work extra harder to consolidate the gains chalked by the past leadership.
Rt Hon. Emmanuel Acheampong,the outgone Speaker,thanked the members of parliament for their immense support during his tenure in office.
Cerfificates were awarded to deserving members of parliament for their selfless dedication and commitment to the House.
The members of parliament danced to all manner of songs,including Bisa K Dei’s ‘Brother’and Shatta Wale’s ‘Kakai’.
Present at the ceremony were Seth Odame Mensah,UCC GRASAG president and Major,Casford Hall president.
