The Theatre and Films Studies Department of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has, as part of its curriculum activities, launched its 13th season of performances for the 2016/17 academic year at the university’s Main Auditorium.
The season, which is made up of a series of stage performances, this year, had the Deputy minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Dzifa Gomashie, as its special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Dzifa Gomashie stated that Creative Arts requires a collaborative effort and the need to support each other. She therefore encouraged every individual to patronize made in Ghana products to ensure the sustenance of the Creative Arts industry.
In an interview with Choicism. com, the Head of the Department, Dr. Vitus Nanbigbe, said the main purpose of the launch was to announce to the university community and its environs, the commencement of the department’s stage performances. He called on their cherished audiences for their usual support and participation to make the season a successful one.
Professor Victor Yankah, a lecturer at the Department, expressed disappointment at the manner in which some people, especially students turn to look at the programmes they are pursuing as more important than the Arts.
According to him, since the programme has been accepted by the Academic Board of the university and passed by the National Accreditation Board, it is deemed to be of high significance. Professor Yankah also stressed that there is no programme in the university that is superior or inferior to the other. He therefore took the opportunity to encourage all to accord some respect to the Arts programmes inasmuch as they also have a place in society.
As part of the launch, there were performances of the excerpts of “An Inspector Calls”, “Corpses Comedy” and “I Am so Happy I Could Just Shit”.
There will also be a Weekend of Classic African Films from Thursday, October 6, to Saturday October 8, 2016 at the Main Auditorium which will show “Potomato”, “Tsotsi”, and “October 1st” movies respectively.
The season will be crowned with a Film Week from 27th to 29th October, 2016 where audiences will be given complementary cards for free.
The launch of the season was graced by some members of the Faculty of Arts including, the Faculty officer, Mr. Alexander Danso; Dr. Samuel Nai, among other lecturers and students of the university.
