The temporary ban on the sale of food and unauthorized sachet water vending on campus has taken effect, Choicism’s checks this week revealed.
The ban was necessitated following the outbreak of cholera in the University of Cape Coast and its surrounding communities on the 23rd of October 2016. The outbreak has recorded 219 cases.
The temporary ban was placed by the management of the Directorate of University Health Services in collaboration with the office of the Dean of Students, Directorate of Legal, Consular and General Services and the Abura sub-Metro of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly on Friday, 25th November 2016.
The ban however took effect on Monday, 28th November 2016. Choicism.com’s checks revealed that food sellers at the science market, ATL market and some other places were not at work.
“The decision has become imperative as almost all cases recorded have been traced to contaminated food and unwholesome water supply in and around the University” the authorities stated.
The authorities feared that if such a decision was not taken, the epidemic could worsen the already bad situation and may warrant the closure of the University as a response to the spread of the disease according to the Public Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service.
Students are therefore advised to prepare their own food and stop patronising food and water from ‘untrusted’ sources until the decision is reviewed.
