The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Nelson Buah, has disclosed that the School of Agriculture in line with its vision is in the process of developing a commercial farm on a 419 acre tract of land at Twifo Wamaso in the Central Region.
Additionally, the farm will also serve as an off-campus teaching and research station for the faculty and students as well as community engagement to farmers within the Central Region and beyond.
Prof. Nelson made this known when two officials from the United States Department of Agriculture Agency (USDA) namely; Mr. Russel J. Nicely and Mrs. Elwasoeur Ashitery paid courtesy call on him in his office.
The highlights of the discussions centered on strengthening collaboration between USDA and UCC in the area of Agriculture. In addition, the two institutions would build the capacity of local farmers to ensure food sufficiency.
Welcoming the officials, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor lauded USDA for partnering UCC for the Monitoring, Evaluation and Technical Support Services Programme (METTS). He expressed confidence that UCC would continue to collaborate with USDA in areas of would be of benefit to the two institutions.
On his party Mr. Nicely, noted that USDA was poised to engage institutions like UCC to promote inter and intra-regional trade in Africa and USA. He hinted that USDA would soon relocate its West African Office to Ghana and therefore called on UCC to position itself to take advantage of this opportunity.
The visitors were later had discussions with the lecturers of the School of Agriculture. They were also taken on a guided tour to the University Farms by Mr. Kofi Manu, the coordinator of the METTS programme on campus.
