UCC Needs College of Health Sciences

The Committee instituted to establish collaboration between the University Health Services (UHS) and the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) has recommended the setting up of a College of Health Sciences to incorporate all health related programmes in the University.

The programmes for the college will include Medicine, Surgery, Nursing, Optometry and Medical Laboratory Technology which are currently under the Faculties of Medical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences.

The Chairman of the Committee, Prof. K. Awusabo-Asare made this recommendation when the committee presented their report to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Nelson Buah in his office. He noted that the UHS and SMS should identify areas of serious need to enable the two bodies to achieve their mandate.

He called for a closer working relationship between the UHS and the SMS so that medical students could undertake their clinicals and housemanship at the University Hospital. He further indicated that the UHS could also request for consultancy services from the high class medical professionals from the SMS to enhance the delivery of quality health care.

Receiving the report, Prof. Buah asserted that the collaboration between the UHS and SMS was of utmost concern to the university management and therefore gave the assurance that the recommendations of the committee would be considered for implementation within the shortest possible time. He expressed gratitude to members of the committee for expediting work on the collaboration within the stipulated period.
