Mr. Kumar commended UCC for producing high calibre professionals who work in different facet of the economy. He explained that the collaboration would lay a firm foundation for the Indian Embassy in Ghana to link UCC to Universities in India for staff and students exchange. He noted that UCC would also be eligible for educational grants from the Indian Government and Organisations.
The Deputy Indian High Commissioner expressed this interest when he paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole at his office.
Welcoming the Deputy Commissioner, the Vice-Chancellor, Kuupole thanked the Indian Embassy in Ghana for showing interest in UCC and expressed confidence that the partnership would contribute to exchange of knowledge and culture. He pointed out that the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) was a priority area where the university needed a lot of support such as capacity building, staff and students exchange programmes.
Prof. Kuupole also acknowledged the immense contributions of India to Information Communication Technology globally and therefore called for assistance in setting up a robust system for UCC. He also requested for training opportunities for lecturers and avenues for staff and student training. He added that the ICT would also enhance effective teaching and learning at the regional study centres of the Centre for Continuing Education. He finally asked for the establishment of a chair by the Indian Embassy in any of the faculties.
The Dean of the SMS, Prof. Harold Amonoo Koufi, who was present at the meeting mentioned telemedicine as one of the innovations in medical care and training which the school was ready to partner institutions in India. He also asked for opportunities to enable medical students from SMS to undertake internship in hospitals in India.
Responding, His Excellency Mr. Kumar noted that the Embassy had been offering postgraduate scholarships to Ghanaians to study various programmes India. He also indicated that lecturers of the SMS could take advantage of a scholarship scheme dubbed “super specialized courses” to enrich their expertise for a period of four weeks to six months in India.
