The Department of Surgery of the University of Cape Coast School of Medical Sciences (UCCSMS) has initiated plans to establish a research centre of excellence in health services which would bring together health professionals in the world to conduct research into serious health problems.
The centre through research would employ interdisciplinary investigations a wide range of health areas. These include health policy, primary care and chronic illness. The Centre will provide an environment and infrastructure for medical professionals with varied interests and expertise to collaborate and develop projects that would promote quality of life for all.
The Head of the Department of Surgery, Prof. S. Debrah disclosed this when he led a team of medical professionals to present a proposal to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Nelson Buah at his office. He was accompanied by Prof. Ganiyu Rahman, Visiting Professor, Department of Surgery; Dr. Tony Annan, Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Mrs. Philomena Annan, Physiotherapist.
Prof. Deborah who is also a Senior Medical Officer at the Central Regional Hospital (soon to be known as Cape Coast Teaching Hospital) explained that the centre’s approach to health care would be to lay greater emphasis on prevention and treatment of diseases.
He also indicated that the centre would form a composite part of the medical village which is being developed by the School of Medical Sciences at the North Campus. He noted that the centre would expose the students to how to handle complicated health cases.
Responding Prof. John Nelson Buah commended the team for bringing out such an innovative concept to addressing the teeming health problems through research adding that “this centre perfectly in line with the university’s vision of instituting a research agenda.” He assured them of the support of the university management to ensure the realization of the objectives of the centre.
The Registrar, Mr. John Kofi Nyan expressed optimism that the centre would contribute its quota towards enhancing the international credentials of UCC. He therefore urged the team to remain focused since its benefits were enormous.
