The SRC General Assembly has unanimously approved a proposal to honour the Assin North Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong and C.E.O of Unibank, Dr. Kwabena Duffour for their contributions to the university.
Addressing the General Assembly on Wednesday, 12th February, 2014 at the School of Medical Science(SMS) auditorium, the SRC President David Boakye disclosed that Kennedy Agyapong contributed 1.5 billion cedis in 2002 for the establishment of the Medical School while Dr Kwabena Duffour on the other hand bore the cost of a 400kv plant costing 2.4 billion cedis which is meant to power FELT in the event of lights out.
Explaining further, the SRC President maintained that during the sod-cutting ceremony to mark the establishment of the Medical School during the Kufour regime, Kennedy Agyapong excited by the feat contributed the said amount but owing to the change of government in 2008, the member of parliament was not invited in the commissioning of the school nor the graduation of the first batch of the school and therefore it is appropriate that he is remembered and honoured.
He also said that, after successfully helping Unibank to obtain a land for the establishment of a branch on campus, the bank’s C.E.O, Dr. Kwabena Duffour in return bore the cost of a 400kv plant at a cost of 2.4 billion cedis which the SRC promised to install at FELT and therefore it is appropriate that he is honoured as an appreciation of his kind gesture to the university.
He then moved a motion that the General Assembly approve so that both men are given a citation in recognition of their contribution to the university in a date to be announced in the no distant future.
The SRC President also took the occasion to outline some of the achievements he has chalked so far which includes the construction of a footpath that links Casford Hall to Valco Hall, installation of projectors, the construction of a shuttle station which is yet to be completed among others.
Reacting to a question regarding an alleged letter he wrote to the National Security in respect of the arrest of a contractor working on the Sports Complex, the president disclosed that he was a signatory of the said alleged letter but never wrote it to the National Security, explaining that after receiving a frustrating call from the Vice- Chancellor that the said contractor had been arrested without the knowledge of any member of the university authority, he quickly posted the said alleged letter to facebook group pages to solicit the views of students and since it was done in a haste, he used shorthand writing.
He added that his detractors then masterminded and sent the said post to the Daily Post Newspaper and the paper also published the said material without recourse to him.
