The Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Domwini Dabire Kuupole, has appealed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to provide the University a dedicated line to forestall the frequent power cuts being experienced on campus.
Prof. Kuupole made this appeal when a delegation from the Central Regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana “(ECG) led by the General Manager in-charge of the region, Mr. Anokye Abebrese, called on him at his office.
The Delegation was at the university to introduce the new General Manager for the region to the management of UCC and also to discuss the possibility of introducing pre-paid metering to commercial and individual consumers on campus, and also find out the possible ways that the university could settle its indebtedness to E.C.G.
Mr. Anokye Abebrese assured that enough sensitisation would be embarked on before the implementation of the pre-paid metering system at places earmarked on campus.
The Vice-Chancellor said the university is currently feeling the brunt of the irregular supply facing the nation due to inadequate generation of electricity. This, he said, has affected effective teaching and learning on the campus since most lectures and laboratory activities have been hampered as well as regular supply of water to students, staff and members of the adjoining communities.
“It has been very challenging to run the university in this circumstance. Lectures are disrupted, laboratories cannot function and even water supply is seriously hampered”, he said.
In another development, a two-member delegation from Lancaster University, Ghana Campus, led by Raghav Lal had earlier on visited the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kuupole to find possible ways of collaboration between the two institutions.
Mr. Lal used the opportunity to invite three faculty members from UCC to a workshop in Accra on the current methods of preparing teaching and lecture materials.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kuupole, was grateful to Lancaster University for the step they had taken, and hoped that a lot of fruitful benefits would accrue from the collaboration.
