The Ghana Association of Statistics Students (GASS) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a call on members to take statistics seriously.
The anniversary was on the theme:” Shaping Statistics For Success”.
Addressing members of GASS on campus,the Rector of Kumasi Polytechnic,Prof. N.N.N. Nsowah Nuamah, said that students should take statistics seriously.
He called on the members of the zigmar fraternity (statistics students) to embark on a sensitization programme on the importance of statistics at the senior high school levels so as to arouse the interest of students to study the course at the tertiary level.
He urged members to discard the notion that statistics was a branch of mathematics.
“Statistics can never be a branch of maths.
“The fact that we rely so much on maths does not make us mathematicians”, he noted.
Prof.Nuamah said Information Technology (I T) should be taken seriously in the Department of Statistics in all the universities and polytechnics nationwide.
He charged ladies to dispel their deep-seated fear for statistics,adding that statistics “is not very difficult”.
Touching on Graduate Studies,Dr.Bismark Nkansah,a lecturer at the Mathematics and Statistics Department of UCC,said graduate studies was about team work.
He said if a student was able to identify his strength, it makes him stand out as an effective contributor to team work.
According to him,one needs more than intelligence to be successful in graduate school.
He pointed out boldness, courage,persistence ,computer literacy,among others,as the benchmark for a student to excel well in the graduate school.
For his part,the patron of GASS-UCC,Mr.Francis Eyiah Bediako,who chaired the function,decried how some hospitals and companies were not making good use of data in its operations.
He challenged students to study statistics well.
In his brief address, the president of GASS,Mr.Timothy Boakye,said the GASS executives would strive hard to achieve the objectives of the association.
He urged students not to sit on the fence but pool their resources to help the forward march of association.
As part of the colourful celebration, certificates were given to deserving students who excelled in a quiz organized by the association.
The ceremony was graced by statistics students of the University for Development studies (UDS),Tarkoradi Polytechnic and Cape Coast Polytecthnic.
