The chairman of the UCC @ 50 planning committee, Prof. Kobina Yankson has defended the university’s academic policy of obtaining 80% of marks for a grade A.
He made this remark when he delivered a public lecture on the theme “Quality Assurance in Higher Education in a Globalised Era” on Tuesday at the SMS auditorium.
“UCC academic policy of obtaining 80 marks for an A is close to international standard, unlike China and some Japan universities where students had to obtain 95% for an A” he said.
Prof. Yankson said globalization has come in its wake the need to train graduates who will be competitive both in the domestic and international market. He mentioned that UCC has created the enabling environment for students and thus students should not be mere receptacles of information but seekers of information as well.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. D.D. Kuupole who was the chairman for the occasion advised students to take advantage of the enabling environment and become globally competitive.
