UCC SRC Allay Fears of Students Over Proposed Utility Charges.

The Students Representative Council (SRC) has allayed fears on students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) regarding management’s proposal to add the payment of utilities to next academic year’s fees.

In a Statement issued and signed by the SRC Public Relations Officer, Mr.Theophilus Sosi, and copied to choicism.com, said management had agreed not to charge students on utility next academic year following a round-table meeting and discussion with management a couple of days ago.

Mr.Sosi added that the student leadership had strongly advocated for a drastic reduction of fees, as well as certain components, for next academic year.

According to the statement, the SRC was working tirelessly to make sure the break-down of fees were made public immediately after the Residence Board meeting on Wednesday, June 3, 2015.

Concerning UCC School Fees for Next Academic Year.
29th May, 2015

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE UCC STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
As a precursor to the Residential Board meeting to be held on Wednesday, 3rd June, an important meeting was held between University Management and Student Leadership to discuss the proposed school fees for the next academic year.

PROPOSAL MADE BY UCC MANAGEMENT
At the meeting, Management proposed the payment of utility charges by students with the explanation that government had not officially communicated to the University Management its decision to rescind making students pay for utilities.

The proposal of management falls in line with a decision by Vice-Chancellors Ghana (VCG) to include payment of utilities into school fees until government instructed otherwise. This decision has already taken effect in some public universities.

STANCE OF UCC SRC
The SRC showed strong disapproval to this proposal. The SRC President indicated clearly that students were against the payment of utility fees and that students were also very aware that government, through a press release, had rescinded its decision to make students pay for utilities.

The SRC wishes to allay all fears on the part of students as Management agreed at the meeting to remove the proposed utility charges from the school fees.

The Student Leadership also advocated for a drastic reduction of school fees and disapproved the increment of certain elements such as IT Literacy Fee, ICT User Fee, UCC Cloth, Ambulance Levy, Maintenance and Replacement Fee among others.

The UCC SRC is working tirelessly to ensure that the school fees for the next academic year are moderate. The school fees will be made public after the Residence Board meeting on Wednesday. As promised, the breakdown of the will also be made available.

Signed
Theophilus Sosi
