The SRC of the University of Cape Coast in collaboration with Promasidor Ghana, producers of Cowbell range of products, organized aerobic exercise on Saturday, April,5, 2014, in an effort to promote healthy living among students.
Participants numbering about one thousand and over, were all adorned in Cowbell branded T-shirts and walked amidst singing “jama” and dancing to the tunes of brass band with the Air-force Cadet directing vehicles.
Students from Old-site made a stop at the Science Shuttle Station and were joined by their counterparts from Science, and together they walked through the Lecturers’ village through the University Practice Senior High School and finally converged at the Casford field where trained instructors took the participants through some basic exercise drills.
The participants who were also treated to renditions of popular Ghanaian songs, were also served with breakfast of Cowbell and sliced bread.
The aerobic exercise was not participated by only students but saw some Senior Members as well participating including Mr. Eric Boro, Assistant Registrar of Division of Human Resource.
In an interview with choicism.com, Mr. Boro indicated that exercise is a prerequisite for healthy living and therefore there was the need for them to also get themselves involved.
“I have always involved myself in students’ activities but exercise is also good for everybody, throughout the week it is all sedentary work and this has provided the platform for us to exercise,” he said.
He also revealed that as an organizing member of the GUSA games to be hosted by UCC, it was prudent that he participate in the exercise to also observe students’ enthusiasm.
Head of Sports and Lecturer at Hyper, Mr. John Elvis Hagan however bemoaned that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) and Cardiovascular diseases are on the rise and therefore the aerobic exercise was timely to help curb these diseases.
He disclosed that this was the maiden edition of such a big event organized by Promasidor Ghana in Tertiary Institutions and company has hinted replicating the same events in other Tertiary institutions, recommending that such events should be organized at least once in a month.
The SRC PRO, Robert Ubindam on his part thanked students for coming out in their numbers to participate in such an event, maintaining that their administration could be touted as one of the best regimes if not the best, in the history of SRC leadership in UCC.
A member of the National Road Safety Commission, Mr. Richard Badu Fredu Agyeman however advised the organizers to consider engaging the services of the police and other traffic regulators to help direct vehicles in future events, maintaining that we should not compromise on road safety.
