A total of 177 cholera cases have been recorded at the University of Cape Coast Hospital so far, which has resulted in the death of a student.
This was disclosed by the Medical Directorate of the university hospital, Dr. Kabiru Aziz,, during an interview with morning show host, Mary Ama Bawa on ATL fm onThursday, September,18, 2014.
Dr. Aziz disclosed that a student was rushed to the hospital by his roomate unconscious, on Wednesday, September, 17.
He said, medical staff at post at the time resuscitated him but in the late evening, the student went unconscious again and all attempts to resuscitate him proved futile leading to his death.
Dr Aziz said the situation was overwhelming and cautioned students to be vigilant of where they bought food.
This situation, he said, has compelled the university authorities to clampdown on food vendors to ensure the safety of the university community.
He explained that adequate preparations have been put in place to contain the situation, and that doctors would be available at all times to render services to the university community.
He advised students to report early to the hospital at any least sign of cholera but also entreated them to avoid buying food unnecessarily on campus.
