The Accra Open is an international debate competition that saw participants from Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia and Mali. It was held from the 5th till the 12th of June at the University of Ghana.
The tournament was made up of a British Parliamentary debate and a Public Speaking Contest.
It was the first time the Debate Society had participated in any major tournament. The society was represented by four teams and two adjudicators. The teams were Cream, Cobalt, Ash and Silver.
The Debate Society was represented by Theophilus Sosi, Dennis Larbi Ampofo, Thomas Nimo, Valerie Adjei Mensah, Ebenezer Antiri, Issah Mohammed, Wendy Aniagyei, Michael Chris Tetteh, Gloria Arhin and Haruna Yakubu.
Team Silver made up of Theophilus Sosi (SRC PRO) and Dennis Larbi Ampofo (Oguaa Hall President) qualified to the knockout stages after nine rounds of competitive debating. They qualified with the 5th highest points out of 40 teams.
Team Silver made it to the quarter finals but unfortunately could not progress. Yet, out of 80 debaters, Sosi was the 8th best debater and Dennis was 11th best. Other members of the UCC team also took significant ranks.
Thomas Nimo also made it to the grande finale of the the Public Speaking Competition.
This performance leaves an encouraging room for improvement for the team and Society.
The main aim of debating is for capacity building and the development of critical thinking and public speaking abilities. The Society is grateful to its Patrons and members for the very strong support the gave to make their participation successful.
