University of Cape Coast’s Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah has won the first gold medal for Ghana at the ongoing 2019 African Games in Morocco on Tuesday.
17-year-old athlete won gold after finishing first in the women’s high jump with the best clearance of 1.84m.
Morocco’s Rhizlane Siba and Dibow Ariyat Ubang came second and third respectively with the same clearance of 1.81m.
Prior to Tuesday, Ghana had won four medals – all bronze in weightlifting courtesy Winnifred Ntumi (three) and David Akwei.
Team Ghana now finds themselves 20th on the medal table with five medals. Egypt leads with a total of 136 medals, followed by South Africa and hosts Morocco with 56 and 71 medals respectively after nine days of the games.
Earlier on Tuesday, sprinters Josep Paul Amoah and Sean Safo-Antwi both missed out on medals in the men’s 100m finals, finishing 4th and 5th respectively.
Grace Obour reached the women’s 400m finals after finishing second in the semi-finals in a time of 52.14s.
