The University of Education, Winneba, is to open its fifth campus at Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo Region as part of efforts to its duties to train more highly-qualified teachers for the nation. The Campus will be known as College of Distance Education Extension Service. The University has four Campuses at Winneba, Ajumako, Asante Mampong and Kumasi.
The Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, said this at the 2012/2013 Matriculation of 3,890 students to undertake diploma and post-diploma courses through distance and sandwich for the Southern Sector on Thursday.
The Southern Sector has 23 Distance Learning Centres in the Western, Central Grater Accra, Volta, Eastern, Central and Brong-Ahafo regions.
He appealed for support from the government and all stakeholders to enable the UEW accomplish its dream.
Professor Asabere-Ameyaw said as part of their student service package, the Learning Centres at Accra College of Education, Tamale, Nkawkaw, Koforidua, Navrongo, Tarkwa, Hohoe and Wa have been connected to the internet to enhance teaching and learning by distance.
The Accra Academy Study Centre, Atebubu, Bechem, Obuasi, Axim, Sogakope, Kumasi, Techiman, Enchi and Assin-Fosu are also being connected, he said, adding that the project is 90 percent completed.
Professor Asabere-Ameyaw urged the students to take their studies seriously and avoid cheating during examinations.
Dr Kwame Asante, Director of Institute for Educational Development and Extension (IEDE) of the University assisted the Registrar, Mr Christopher Y. Acquah-Mensah, to administer the matriculation oath to the fresh students.
