A Christian Confederate soldier’s prayer caught my attention some time ago. It was, to me, a reminder of how many a times, we concentrate on the things we do not have and for that reason, forget to be grateful for the ones that we don’t even know we have been blessed with. I believe it is worth sharing with you. He said:
“I asked God for strength that I might achieve, I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health that I might do greater things, I was given infirmity that I might do better things.
I asked for riches that I might be happy, I was given poverty that I be might be wise.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men, I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things that I might enjoy life, I was given life that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing I asked for but everything I hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.”
That was his prayer, said at the end of his war probably after he had realized how far his protector had brought him.
From this, I have learnt that there are blessings even in unanswered prayers. Our creator has a special reason for every circumstance we find ourselves. Let us not concentrate too much on the ones we have not received and know that even in the midst of troubles and other misfortunes, we have already been blessed.
